• APPEARANCE & ATTIRE
Other than Ukitake's initial appearance being what looks like him coming out of bed, Ukitake isn't that bad appearance wise. As for fashion, there isn't much in the Soul Society anyway. Fortunately, the anime lets the characters of the series wear different things, but the manga is pretty straight forward when it comes to clothing.

Appearance
» In General
When compared to the other captains of the Soul Society, Ukitake is seems very different. He's possibly one of the few captains who are able to lighten a tense mood. An example of this was when Ukitake noticed Rukia, saluted, commented on her weight loss, and asked her how she was feeling, shortly after stoping Byakuya from attacking Ganjyuu any further. Ukitake also seems more approachable than the other captains. If you were wondering what time it is, would you ask Hirako Shinji or Ukitake if they were the only two choices you had?

» The Hair
Ukitake's hair color is white, but sometimes is seen with a grey or blue hue, when in the dark. Ukitake's hair has been white since infancy. The reason why Ukitake's hair is white is because of his illness. Three days after his first attack of his illness his hair became white. Currently, Ukitake's hair is long, but when he was younger his hair was basically a shorter version of his current hair length. Ukitake's hair is also combed over to the right and portions of it lay on his face and inbetween his eyebrows. You may notice in the manga that the length of his hair seems to fluctuate, but it is usually around the same length. Also, Shunsui, one of Ukitake's good friends, has long hair. Perhaps it's a sign of their friendship?

» An Age?
Ukitake's birthday is on December 21. How old is Ukitake? An exact age hasn't been revealed, as with most of the characters who reside in the Soul Society. However, one may recall that Yamamoto saying that both Ukitake and Shunsui were the first to become captains through his academy. Also, in the special chapter with Renji, Hinamori, and Kira while they were in the academy, there was an introduction inregards to the academy itself saying that it has had a 2000 year history. Putting those two facts together, chances are, Ukitake and Shunsui are over 2000 years old. Now, how about Yamajii himself? (scary!)

» Illness
Ukitake suffers from tuberculosis and because of it, he is sometimes seen violently coughing whenever he is under stress. Ukitake isn't able to do much work as a captain because of this illness, so he would usually has his subordinates do some of it for him.

» Hobbies
Apart from sleeping and doing captain work, Ukitake probably does other things? In VJUMP specials, Ukitake was once accused by Soifon for doing "Jiji" (Grandfather) type things. In short, Ukitake plants bonsai, and drinks tea on his spare time.

» Other Things to Notice
This is probably useless information: Ukitake's eye color is brown or whatever color Kubo decides to color it in color spreads. In the oav you may notice that his Haori is crinkled. Ukitake is usually seen with a sweatdrop somewhere on his face even when he's not under a significant amount of stress. There is usually a sweatdrop found on his left cheek. Where does Ukitake keep all the candy he gives Hitsugaya?

Attire
» Kimono
Whether you are a typical shinigami, vice-captain, or captain, every shinigami is to wear a black kimono. The kimono also appears to be two layers, the top layer is black and the bottom layer is white. The shinigami's kimono is tied with a white colored obi.

» Haori
All captain status shinigami in the Soul Society wear a white haori ontop of their kimono. The back of the haori is a black diamond shape with a somewhat rounded octagon in the center. In the white octagon is the Captain's division number. For Ukitake, his haori will have 十三 (13) written on it. Near the bottom edge of the haori is a circle and line pattern. In the anime you may notice that Ukitake's haori has a split in the back, whereas in the manga there isn't.

» Hakama
All shinigamis are seen to usually wear hakama, the pant like portion of their kimono. It, like the kimono, is also black.

» Sandals
All shinigamis are also seen to wear some type of footwear. Most of them wear a type of sandal which is worn over a pair of white tabi. (odori tabi or 'regular' tabi?)

» Other Attire
In the scene which Ukitake is first introduced, he is not wearing the typical shinigami uniform, but what probably is nemaki which is basically sleepwear with a type of vest above it. In a chapter color spread, Ukitake is seen wearing a black suit, with a dark vest, black tie, and white dress shirt. That particular color spread has Ukitake with his hair tied up in a pony tail. In a character poll color spread he's seen wearing a red snow suit and light pink mittens. In the "bleach in the beach !?" special chapter, Ukitake is seen in trunks and a whistle around his neck.
